NIST Releases Cybersecurity Framework, Silent on NSA's Role
The National Institute for Standards and Technologies has released the Preliminary Cybersecurity Framework. Earlier this year, President Obama directed NIST to develop a Framework for Cybersecurity. In Executive Order 13636, the President said the NIST Framework should protect individual privacy and civil liberties. EPIC submitted comments to the NIST supporting the protections for civil liberties, recommending separate treatment for computer crimes and "cyberterrorism" and official acknowledgement of the 1992 OECD Security Guidelines. In September 2013, the Guardian, the New York Times, and ProPublica reported that the National Security Agency directed NIST to reduce a key security standard.
