Authors Issue Declaration Against Mass Surveillance
More than 500 leading writers from around the world have endorsed the declaration "A Stand for Democracy in the Digital Age." The Writers against Mass Surveillance stated that "A person under surveillance is no longer free; a society under surveillance is no longer a democracy." The declaration was issued in December 10, 2013, International Human Rights Day. Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights establishes privacy as fundamental right. EPIC has urged the United States to ratify Council of Europe Convention 108 — the Privacy Convention.
