H.R.1450. Personal Information Privacy Act of 1999. Would provide various protections for credit information, social security numbers, and photographs in both the private and public sectors. H.R.2084. Department of Transportation and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2000. Funding for Department of Transportation for the fiscal year ending September, 2000. Sponsor: Wolf (R-VA). Two amendments proposed by Sen. Shelby (R-AL) pertain to privacy. Section 350 eliminates federal funding for highway projects in states that sell drivers' license personal information, motor vehicle records, or photographs from drivers' licenses. Section 355 repeals section 656(b) of the Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 which required social security numbers to be displayed on drivers' licenses. Became Public Law No: 106-69.

H.R.2644. Personal Data Privacy Act of 1999. Limits disclosure of sale of personal data from government agencies and would provide access generally to personal data held by both government and private agencies. Sponsor: Rep Hinchey, Maurice D. (D-NY). Referred to the Subcommittee on Civil Service.

H.R.3321. Electronic Privacy Bill of Rights Act of 1999. Seeks to establish privacy protections (notice, consent, accesss, security) for personal data collected by web sites. H.R.3770. Secure Online Communication Enforcement Act of 2000. Seeks to establish opt-in for all personal information collected online. Sponsor: Rep Jackson, Jesse L., Jr. (D-IL). Referred to the Subcommittee on Crime.

H.R.4059. Online Privacy and Disclosure Act. Creates voluntary system by which companies would agree to abide by privacy principles and display a seal overseen by the Federal Trade Commission. H.R.4311. Identity Theft Protection Act of 2000. Institutes confirmations of changes of address, annually distributed free credit reports, and access to information held by individual reference services providers (see also S.2328). H.R.4469. Child Support Distribution Act of 2000. H.R.4585. Medical Financial Privacy Protection Act. Amends the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (S.900, Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999) to include provisions governing the use of health information by financial institutions. H.R.4611. Social Security Number Protection Act of 2000. Seeks to limit the sale and purchase of the social security number (also see S.2699). Sponsor: Rep Markey, Edward J. (D-MA). Referred to House Ways and Means.

H.R.4857. Privacy and Identity Protection Act of 2000. Far-reaching law that would restrict government uses of the social security number and create regulations over the sale and purchase and sale of social security numbers by the private sector (see also S.2876). S.2606. Consumer Privacy Protection Act. Broad privacy bill that would establish legal standards for privacy on the Internet and would increase protections for book and music purchase records. Sponsor: Sen Hollings, Ernest (D-SC). Referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

S.2699. Social Security Number Protection Act of 2000. Seeks to limit the sale and purchase of the social security number (also see H.R.4611). Sponsor: Sen Feinstein, Dianne (D-CA). Read twice and referred to the Committee on Finance.

S.2857. Privacy Policy Enforcement in Bankruptcy Act of 2000. Prevents personal data such as a name, address, or credit card number to claimed as an asset in bankruptcy proceedings. Sponsor: Sen Leahy, Patrick J. (D-VT). Read twice and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.

S.2871. Social Security Number Privacy Act of 1999. Amends the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (see S.900) to prohibit financial institutions from selling social security numbers. Sponsor: Sen Shelby, Richard C. (R-AL). Read twice and referred to the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

S.2876. Privacy and Identity Protection Act of 2000. Far-reaching law that would restrict government uses of the social security number and create regulations over the sale and purchase and sale of social security numbers by the private sector (see also H.R.4857).
